What systems do we integrate with?

OpenAthens is designed to integrate with existing systems and directories such as Microsoft Azure, G Suite, OneLog, Shibboleth, CAS, SirsiDynix, OKTA, Ping Identity, and many more.

Connections

If your organization already has a user directory storing user account and usernames and passwords, OpenAthens is able to connect securely with this data. Single sign-on is easily established along with the benefits of the OpenAthens administrative area. Some of the options are listed below.

  1. SAML

OpenAthens can connect to SAML sources such as Microsoft Azure, Google Apps, OneLog, Shibboleth, and others so that you do not have to issue personal accounts for your users. As well as the ability to use local accounts instead of maintaining a separate set of credentials, access to federated resources that already involve discovery (identifying the users’ home organization) will take the user directly to your SAML login.

  2. ADFS

Connect directly to ADFS (Active Directory Federation Services) so that you do not have to issue personal accounts for your users. As well as the ability to use local accounts instead of maintaining a separate set of credentials, access to federated resources that already involve discovery (identifying the users’ home organization) will take the user directly to your ADFS login.

  3. LDAP

Connect directly to an LDAP server so that you do not have to issue personal accounts for your users. Anything that uses standard LDAP protocols is acceptable so this works well with ActiveDirectory too. As well as the ability to use local accounts instead of maintaining a separate set of credentials, access to federated resources that already involve discovery (identifying the users’ home organization) will take the user directly to your LDAP login at our authentication point – no further discovery is required.

  4. API

The OpenAthens local authentication API can be used to log your users into the system based on credentials stored in any system you can gain programmatic access to.  You will be required to implement some code at your end.

  5. SirsiDynix

OpenAthens can connect to a SirsiDynix system using its Symphony or Horizon API so that you do not have to issue personal accounts for your users.

  6. CAS

OpenAthens can connect to CAS (Client Access Server) so that you do not have to issue personal accounts for your users. You will need a CAS server with SAML support enabled.

  7. OIDC

  8. Evergreen ILS

What should I do if I need help to set up a new directory connection?

We understand setting up new connections can be time-consuming, and administrators often get in trouble when setting up a connection themselves and ask for help from our team. To set up a local directory connection to OpenAthens, we can help – contact your account manager. There is a small set up fee which includes all support, a consultancy call and accurate mapping and set up.

Custom resources and applications

Many organizations have set up their own instances of platforms and applications that have SAML access management protocols built into the system. Our software allows organizations to establish a single sign-on session that will include these individual apps including G Suite and VLEs (virtual learning environments) like Moodle or Blackboard. These are just some of the applications we work with…
